Olive Pomace-Derived Biomasses Fractionation through a Two-Step Extraction Based on the Use of Ultrasounds: Chemical Characteristics

Maria del Mar Contreras et al.

Summary: The study found that extracted olive pomace and residual pulp from olive pit cleaning have high antioxidant content, with even higher levels in the extracted olive pomace. Ultrasound-assisted extraction was effective in recovering antioxidants from biomasses, resulting in different phenolic compounds depending on the biomass.

A biorefinery approach to obtain antioxidants, lignin and sugars from exhausted olive pomace

Irene Gomez-Cruz et al.

Summary: In this study, exhausted olive pomace (EOP) was fractionated into valuable components, including an aqueous extract rich in hydroxytyrosol and mannitol and lignins with antioxidant properties. An organosolv lignin (OL) with higher total phenolic content and antioxidant activity than other lignins was obtained through pretreatment and extraction of EOP. Chemical differences were observed that could explain the superior performance of OL.
