Sensitive dependence of trajectories on tracer seeding positions - coherent structures in German Bight backward drift simulations

Ulrich Callies

Summary: This study examines surface drift simulations in the German Bight and identifies non-smooth ridges in the FTLE fields as indicators of sensitive trajectories to tracer seeding positions. The simulated FTLE fields can provide support for the interpretation of monitoring data, indicating when backward trajectory simulations are unreliable due to their high sensitivity.
