Life in suspension and its impact on phytoplankton morphology: an homage to Colin S. Reynolds

Luigi Naselli-Flores et al.

Summary: The morphological diversity of phytoplankton is an evolutionarily-driven strategy to cope with the variability and unpredictability of the turbulent pelagic environment. Turbulence is a key driver of phytoplankton dynamics, shaping the shape and size structure of phytoplankton assemblages. The evolutionary response of phytoplankton to turbulence governs their access to resources and survival in dynamic aquatic environments.

Factors controlling the competition between Phaeocystis and diatoms in the Southern Ocean and implications for carbon export fluxes

Cara Nissen et al.

Summary: The high-latitude Southern Ocean phytoplankton community is shaped by the competition between Phaeocystis and silicifying diatoms, with the relative abundance of these two groups controlling primary and export production, the production of dimethylsulfide, the ratio of silicic acid and nitrate available in the water column, and the structure of the food web. Phaeocystis and diatoms play important roles in high-latitude carbon cycling, with their importance mainly controlled by spatiotemporal variability in temperature and iron availability, and the succession from Phaeocystis to diatoms may happen in coastal areas. Aggregation and grazing by zooplankton are important factors to explain the simulated seasonal biomass evolution and carbon export fluxes.
