Multiplex species-specific PCR identification of native giant clams in the South China Sea: A useful tool for application in giant clam stock management and forensic identification

Haitao Ma et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the utility of a multiplex species-specific PCR for identifying five giant clam species in the South China Sea based on mitochondrial COI gene markers. The approach allows for rapid, reliable, and cost-effective identification, improving the efficiency and quality of giant clam stock management, protection, and forensic identification by reducing the risk of misidentification.

Drivers of the Abundance of Tridacna spp. Giant Clams in the Red Sea

Susann Rossbach et al.

Summary: This study provides the first large-scale survey of Red Sea Tridacna spp. densities, showing the distribution and densities of Tridacnae in the region. Results indicate that geographical parameters such as latitude, distance to shore, depth, and reef zone, along with local environmental factors, are the main drivers for local Tridacna spp. densities.

Effects of Symbiodiniaceae Phylotypes in Clades A-E on Progeny Performance of Two Giant Clams (Tridacna squamosa and T. crocea) During Early History Life Stages in the South China Sea

Chao Long et al.

Summary: Different zooxanthella species have varying effects on larval metamorphosis in giant clams, but do not significantly affect post-metamorphosis growth. Zooxanthella species do not have a significant impact on mantle color in giant clams, but progeny with clade E1 zooxanthellae are smaller than those with other clades. Giant clam species is the main factor influencing progeny growth.

The evaluation of culture performance and mantle coloration of two boring giant clam (Tridacna crocea) strains

Zihua Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that wild yellow-green giant clams in the South China Sea were consistently larger than blue clams on Huangyan Island and Zhaoshu Island. After a 1.5-year cultivation experiment, the control strain showed the highest survival rate, while the blue strain had the lowest survival rate. Furthermore, it was discovered that the yellow-green and blue mantle colors are genetically stable.
