Mastomys natalensis (Smith, 1834) as a natural host for Schistosoma haematobium (Bilharz, 1852) Weinland, 1858 x Schistosoma bovis Sonsino, 1876 introgressive hybrids

Boris A. E. S. Savassi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the role of micro-mammals in the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium, S. bovis, and/or S. haematobium x S. bovis in southern Benin. Results suggest that Mastomys natalensis may serve as a new host for the transmission of S. haematobium x S. bovis, based on the presence of adult schistosomes and multi-peak cercarial chronotypes. Molecular analysis reveals the presence of both S. bovis and S. haematobium x S. bovis genotypes in the collected samples.

Diverging patterns of introgression from Schistosoma bovis across S. haematobium African lineages

Olivier Rey et al.

Summary: The study found that there is low genetic diversity within Schistosoma haematobium species, with most samples showing signs of past introgression with Schistosoma bovis. The results strongly suggest that the introgression occurred a long time ago and was unidirectional from S. bovis within S. haematobium.

Application of a Genus-Specific LAMP Assay for Schistosome Species to Detect Schistosoma haematobium x Schistosoma bovis Hybrids

Beatriz Crego-Vicente et al.

Summary: Schistosomiasis is a significant medical and veterinary concern in tropical and subtropical regions, with the emergence of natural hybrids of schistosomes posing a risk of infection to humans and animals. The hybrids have the potential to replace existing species, develop new resistances and pathologies, as well as extend host ranges. The LAMP technology shows promise in detecting pure Schistosoma species and their hybrids, offering potential for field diagnosis and disease surveillance in endemic areas where infections by schistosome hybrids are increasing.
