Diversity of bacteria associated with Hormaphidinae aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

Summary: This study investigated the bacterial flora in hormaphidine aphids using high-throughput sequencing and found that the primary endosymbiont Buchnera aphidicola is the most abundant symbiont. Six secondary symbionts were detected in Hormaphidinae, with widespread distribution of Arsenophonus. The composition of symbionts does not seem to be related to aphid tribes, host plants, or geographical distributions, indicating possible horizontal transfers of these symbionts in Hormaphidinae.

Summary: Wolbachia and Spiroplasma are the most abundant bacteria in T. truncatus, with symbiont infection altering the abundance of many other bacterial genera but not affecting the overall diversity of bacterial communities. The structures of bacterial communities differ significantly among symbiont-infected strains.

Nitrogen Assimilation Varies Among Clades of Nectar- and Insect-Associated Acinetobacters

Summary: Floral nectar is commonly colonized by yeasts and bacteria, whose growth is influenced by their ability to utilize nitrogen sources, withstand high osmotic pressures, and balance carbon-to-nitrogen ratios. The phylogenetic relatedness of strains is associated with nitrogen assimilation variation, and nutrient source as well as isolate origin can predict the ability of acinetobacters to assimilate nitrogen-rich compounds. Inter-clade variation in the potential of acinetobacters as nitrogen scavengers suggests that nutritional dependences might impact interactions between bacteria and yeasts in floral nectar.
