Potential roles of mitochondrial cofactors in the adjuvant mitigation of proinflammatory acute infections, as in the case of sepsis and COVID-19 pneumonia

Giovanni Pagano et al.

Summary: The mitochondrial cofactors alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), and carnitine (CARN) play distinct roles in mitochondrial functioning and have strong antioxidant actions. Studies suggest that ALA and CARN are effective in counteracting inflammation-associated redox biomarkers, while CoQ10 decreases in proinflammatory conditions. The use of MNs in acute disorders shows promise, particularly when used in combination to combat oxidative stress.

Dysregulation of lipid metabolism and pathological inflammation in patients with COVID-19

Summary: This study utilized targeted lipidomic analysis coupled with proinflammatory cytokines and alarmins measurement to investigate the serum of COVID-19 patients with different severity degrees. The study measured serum IL-26, a cytokine involved in the IL-17 pathway, TSLP, and adiponectin, and correlated them with lipid profiles of COVID-19 patients, providing important insights for the classification of the disease and the identification of therapeutic targets.

Potential Role of Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Therapies to Prevent Severe SARS-Cov-2 Complications

Anna M. Fratta Pasini et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus is closely related to oxidative stress and inflammation, with oxidative stress playing a key role in the pathogenesis of COVID-19. The use of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory therapies may help prevent severe complications.
