Effects of fibrinogen synthesis inhibition on vascular cognitive impairment during traumatic brain injury in mice

Nino Muradashvili et al.

Summary: Inhibition of fibrinogen synthesis has been shown to ameliorate traumatic brain injury-induced cerebrovascular permeability increase and short-term memory reduction. This intervention also reduces the expression of PrPC and fibrinogen deposition in the brain, leading to an improvement in STM.

Fibrinogen Interaction with Astrocyte ICAM-1 and PrP(C) Results in the Generation of ROS and Neuronal Death

Nurul Sulimai et al.

Summary: There is a strong association between elevated levels of fibrinogen and short-term memory impairment in neuroinflammatory diseases like traumatic brain injury. The interaction of fibrinogen with astrocytes appears to induce the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, leading to oxidative stress and ultimately neuronal death, which may be a mechanism underlying neurodegeneration and STM reduction during TBI.
