Eastern Cape Healthcare Workers Acquisition of SARS-CoV-2 (ECHAS): Cross-Sectional (Nested Cohort) Study Protocol

Summary: Healthcare workers in South Africa are at increased risk of infection by SARS-CoV-2, and this study aims to assess the seroprevalence of the virus among HCWs in the Eastern Cape. A cross-sectional study will recruit 2250 HCWs and 750 antenatal women to evaluate the infection rate and antibody levels, using chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay for detection. Additionally, a nested cohort study will track changes in antibody levels over time in participants who tested positive for both SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR and serology.

Summary: Understanding the willingness to receive a future vaccine against COVID-19 among university population in Southern Italy can help develop effective strategies and interventions to contain the virus. The majority of the respondents were willing to receive the vaccine, especially among males, faculty members, and those who were not concerned about the safety of the vaccine. Only 21.4% of respondents expressed no worry about the safety of the vaccine.
