COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in the UK: the Oxford coronavirus explanations, attitudes, and narratives survey (Oceans) II

Daniel Freeman et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, identify predictive socio-demographic factors, and determine potential causes in order to provide guidance on information provision. The findings showed that willingness to take the vaccine is closely linked to recognition of its collective importance, and factors such as conspiracy beliefs lower vaccine uptake. Socio-demographic factors such as age, gender, income, and ethnicity also played a role in vaccine hesitancy.

Is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Futile in Coronavirus Disease 2019 Patients Experiencing In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest?

Priyank Shah et al.

Summary: Limited data on outcomes of in-hospital cardiac arrest among COVID-19 patients in the United States led to this retrospective cohort study in rural Southwest Georgia. The study found that regardless of comorbidities, illness severity, or location of arrest, all COVID-19 patients who experienced in-hospital cardiac arrest had a 100% in-hospital mortality rate.

Racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths in the United States: a county-level analysis as of November 2020

Ahmad Khanijahani

Summary: In the United States, counties with a higher proportion of Black population and adults with less than a high school diploma had disproportionately higher COVID-19 cases and deaths. A higher proportion of Hispanic population was associated with higher confirmed cases. Despite adjusting for covariates, observed disparities in COVID-19 deaths persisted, potentially exacerbating existing health disparities among these population groups.

Nonmetropolitan COVID-19 incidence and mortality rates surpassed metropolitan rates within the first 24 weeks of the pandemic declaration: United States, March 1-October 18, 2020

Kevin A. Matthews et al.

Summary: This report compares COVID-19 incidence and mortality rates between nonmetropolitan and metropolitan areas in the United States from March 1 to October 18, 2020. It found that despite the smaller population living in nonmetropolitan areas, the incidence and mortality trends steadily increased and surpassed those in metropolitan areas starting in early August. The findings highlight the equal need for testing, healthcare personnel, and resources in nonmetropolitan areas, and the importance of developing state-specific rural data for tailored prevention messages.

Percentage of Black Population and Primary Care Shortage Areas Associated with Higher COVID-19 Case and Death Rates in Georgia Counties

Peter T. Baltrus et al.

Summary: This study found that a 1% increase in the proportion of Black people in a county resulted in a 2.3% increase in the COVID-19 confirmed case rate and a 3.0% increase in the death rate. Counties designated as primary care shortage areas had 74% higher death rates. These results highlight the impact of racial disparities on the spatial patterns of COVID-19 disease burden in Georgia and emphasize the need for robust primary care infrastructure throughout the state.

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Years of Potential Life Lost Attributable to COVID-19 in the United States: An Analysis of 45 States and the District of Columbia

Jay J. Xu et al.

Summary: The study found significant racial/ethnic disparities in COVID-19 attributable YPLL across states in the United States, with non-Hispanic Blacks and Hispanics experiencing disproportionately high YPLL and non-Hispanic Whites experiencing disproportionately low YPLL. The disparities were more pronounced when measuring YPLL compared to death counts, especially in younger age groups. Additionally, there was substantial state-to-state variability in the magnitudes of the estimated racial/ethnic disparities, suggesting a connection to social determinants of health that vary by state.

Summary: The coronavirus pandemic has disproportionately affected Black citizens in the USA compared to their White counterparts, highlighting social inequities rather than biological differences. The development of safe and effective vaccines may not be enough to eliminate the racial disparities associated with COVID-19, as structural racism in society still needs to be addressed through concerted actions involving multiple segments and participants.
