Nicotinic receptor activation induces NMDA receptor independent long-term potentiation of glutamatergic signalling in hippocampal oriens interneurons

Elizabeth Nicholson et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that acetylcholine release from cholinergic axons is able to trigger heterosynaptic potentiation of glutamatergic signaling to oriens interneurons in the hippocampus, independent of NMDA receptors. This phenomenon is sensitive to postsynaptic Ca2+ chelation and blockers of nicotinic receptors, highlighting the importance of cholinergic signaling in the induction of LTP.

Structure and gating mechanism of the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor

Colleen M. Noviello et al.

Summary: The alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor plays critical roles in the central nervous system and the cholinergic inflammatory pathway as a ligand-gated ion channel. Recent cryo-EM structures of the human alpha 7 nicotinic receptor in different states have provided insights into its gating cycle and functional elements, including a C-terminal latch and an anionic ring that contribute to its high conductance and calcium permeability. Comparisons among the alpha 7 structures have revealed divergence in gating mechanisms within the Cys-loop receptor superfamily.

Plasticity in the Hippocampus, Neurogenesis and Drugs of Abuse

Yosef Avchalumov et al.

Summary: Synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus is crucial for the consolidation and storage of long-lasting memories, while addiction is a chronic disorder characterized by loss of control over drug taking and drug seeking. The review highlights the impact of drug-induced alterations in hippocampal plasticity on relapse behaviors associated with addiction.
