Failure to recombine is a common feature of human oogenesis

Terry Hassold et al.

Summary: Failure of homologous chromosomes to recombine is a significant cause of human meiotic nondisjunction, particularly in maternal origin trisomies. Studies have found high levels of recombination failure in fetal ovarian samples, with a preponderance of MLH1-less homologs involving chromosomes 21 or 22. The presence of exchangeless chromosomes in cells is associated with a reduction in the total number of crossovers, indicating individuals with lower rates of meiotic recombination may be at increased risk of producing aneuploid offspring.

The meiosis-specific cohesin component stromal antigen 3 promotes cell migration and chemotherapeutic resistance in colorectal cancer

Masaru Sasaki et al.

Summary: High expression of STAG3 is associated with poor prognosis in colorectal cancer, while knockdown of STAG3 inhibits cell migration and increases drug sensitivity. Particularly in BRAF-mutant CRC cells, silencing of STAG3 suppresses the expression of specific genes. STAG3 may serve as a potential prognostic marker and therapeutic target for CRC.

Meiotic DNA break repair can utilize homolog-independent chromatid templates in C. elegans

Erik Toraason et al.

Summary: During meiosis, sister chromatids or intra-chromatids can serve as repair templates for double-strand DNA breaks (DSBs), with noncrossover recombination being the predominant outcome. The XPF-1 nuclease likely functions in late prophase to promote repair using sister chromatids or intra-chromatids.

Meiotic sister chromatid exchanges are rare in C. elegans

David E. Almanzar et al.

Summary: The study found that sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) are rare in meiosis in C. elegans germline, with crossover pathways used only to generate a necessary link between homologous chromosomes. Noncrossover pathways, on the other hand, repair almost all other double-strand breaks in this organism.

The Association between Mortality and Male Infertility: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Francesco Del Giudice et al.

Summary: The relationship between impaired male fertility and the risk of early death was explored through systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based retrospective cohort studies. The study found that infertile men have a higher risk of death compared to fertile men, and the risk of death increases with severity of semen quality impairment. However, infertile men have a lower overall risk of death compared to the general population, suggesting the importance of social determinants of health.
