Analysis of wave propagation through functionally graded porous cylindrical structures considering the transfer matrix method

Hesamoddin Shahsavari et al.

Summary: This study on acoustic wave transmission through functionally graded porous cylindrical shells demonstrates that increasing porosity of the outer surface enhances sound transmission loss, while increasing inner porosity has an adverse effect. Functionally grading a porous cylinder dramatically improves the sound insulation of the structure in both mass and stiffness-controlled regions.

Enhancing the flow resistance and sound absorption of open-cell metallic foams by creating partially-open windows

Xiang Yu et al.

Summary: Metallic foams with partially-open window morphology between interconnected pores demonstrate significantly increased flow resistivity and sound absorption coefficient. A new microstructural model for permeability simulation has been developed to account for the increased specific surface area. This study explores a generic approach for designing microstructure-specific foams with increased flow resistance and fully open-celled microstructure.

Wool waste used as sustainable nonwoven for building applications

Chiara Rubino et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential conversion of wool waste into new raw materials suitable for building components by exploring the hygrothermal, acoustic and nonacoustic properties of nonwovens made of 100% wool waste fibers thermally bonded with polyester/copolyester bi-component fibers. The results showed that the tested nonwovens may represent a valid alternative for building applications, thus indicating a new research area in the field.

Perforated closed-cell aluminium foam for acoustic absorption

Kamil C. Opiela et al.

Summary: The closed-cell metal foams are lightweight and durable, but have poor airborne sound absorption due to their fully closed porosity. This paper explores the use of drilling to open the pores of nearly closed-cell aluminum foam to enhance acoustic wave penetration. The study demonstrates the benefits of originally closed porous structure in foam materials through multi-scale modeling and comparison with impedance tube measurements.

Hierarchical pore structure based on cellulose nanofiber/melamine composite foam with enhanced sound absorption performance

Lu Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, cellulose nanofiber and melamine foam were combined for the first time using an environmentally friendly method to create a hierarchical pore structure with both macropores and mesopores. The enhanced multiple reflections and micro-vibration of the sound waves resulted in a significant improvement in sound absorption performance. This work is expected to inspire the design and preparation of high-performance sound absorption materials.

Sustainable Lightweight Insulation Materials from Textile-Based Waste for the Automobile Industry

Zengxiao Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using waste and virgin wool fibres as cost-effective and sustainable alternatives for automotive sound and heat insulation. The results showed that wool nonwoven materials have efficient acoustic and thermal insulating properties, as well as identical antibacterial and antifungal properties with a higher biodegradation rate compared to commercial synthetic insulating materials. Natural wool fibres have the potential to be used as green, lightweight, and sustainable materials in automobiles, qualifying for Reuse-Recycle and Reuse-Recover purposes.
