The case for developing a cohesive systems approach to research across unhealthy commodity industries

Cecile Knai et al.

Summary: There are common strategies among unhealthy commodity industries in shaping public health policy, such as shaping evidence, employing narratives and framing techniques, constituency building, and policy substitution. There are also close business links between these industries, as well as complex relationships with government agencies, allowing them to participate in policy-making forums. A cohesive systems approach to research across unhealthy commodity industries is needed to deepen understanding of this complex area and inform a more effective response.
