Superoxide Formation from Aqueous Reactions of Biogenic Secondary Organic Aerosols

Jinlai Wei et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the dominant formation of superoxide (O2•−) in the aqueous reactions of biogenic SOA generated by photooxidation, with a molar yield of 0.01-0.03%. Kinetic modeling reveals the relationship between the relative yields of various types of ROS and the abundance of organic hydroperoxides and alcohols in SOA.

A ubiquitous tire rubber-derived chemical induces acute mortality in coho salmon

Summary: Research on coho salmon in the U.S. Pacific Northwest revealed unexpected risks of a highly toxic quinone transformation product of the tire rubber antioxidant 6PPD. This implies toxicological relevance for burned-off tire rubber residues to aquatic species.

A Population-Based Cohort Study of Respiratory Disease and Long-Term Exposure to Iron and Copper in Fine Particulate Air Pollution and Their Combined Impact on Reactive Oxygen Species Generation in Human Lungs

Zilong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found positive associations between long-term exposure to iron, copper, and ROS in PM2.5 and the risks of respiratory diseases. The impacts were more robust for COPD, pneumonia mortality, and respiratory mortality. The associations were stronger for ROS than for iron or copper.

Photolytic radical persistence due to anoxia in viscous aerosol particles

Peter A. Alpert et al.

Summary: Research shows that sunlight can induce stable reactive oxygen species and carbon-centered radicals in organic aerosol particles containing iron. Laboratory experiments demonstrate radical formation, release, as well as iron oxidation and mass loss in photoactive organic particles. The study suggests that fast radical reaction and slow diffusion near viscous organic particle surfaces can lead to oxygen depletion, radical trapping, and humidity-dependent oxidation.
