Waste Musa acuminata residue as a potential biosorbent for the removal of hexavalent chromium from synthetic wastewater

A. Hariharan et al.

Summary: The present study evaluates the feasibility of using Musa acuminata bract as a biosorbent for the removal of hexavalent chromium from synthetic wastewater. The results indicate that the optimum pH for effective biosorption is 2.0, with a biosorption capacity of 36.84 mg/g and 87.55% removal of Cr(VI). The Langmuir isotherm model shows the best fit, and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model provides the highest coefficient of determination.

Photocatalytic degradation of amoxicillin from aqueous solutions by titanium dioxide nanoparticles loaded on graphene oxide

Davoud Balarak et al.

Summary: The photocatalytic degradation of amoxicillin by titanium dioxide nanoparticles loaded on graphene oxide under UV light showed more than 99% degradation efficiency under specific conditions. Trapping tests revealed the production of hydroxyl, superoxide radicals, and holes, with the latter playing a major role in the degradation process. The photocatalytic mechanism, stability, recyclability, mineralization efficiency, and low toxicity of the effluent make the GO/TiO2/UV process a promising technique for amoxicillin degradation.

Characteristics and quantification of mechanisms of Cd2+ adsorption by biochars derived from three different plant-based biomass

Weijie Dai et al.

Summary: The physicochemical properties of rice straw, eucalyptus leaves, and vetiver grass biochars pyrolyzed at 400 degrees C were investigated. It was found that rice straw biochar may possess more acidic functional groups and vetiver grass biochar had the largest specific surface area. Cd2+ adsorption by the biochars was dominated by chemical reaction rather than physical interaction. SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR, and XPS analyses revealed precipitation, ion exchange, complexation, and cation pi interaction occurring in all the biochars, with precipitation, ion exchange, and cation pi interaction being the main mechanisms contributing to total adsorption capacity.
