Hydrodeoxygenation of phenol and biomass fast pyrolysis oil (bio-oil) over Ni/WO3-ZrO2 catalyst

Caterina Zerva et al.

Summary: The study investigated the hydrodeoxygenation of pure phenol and catalytic biomass fast pyrolysis oil over 10%Ni/ZrO2 and 10%Ni/WO3-ZrO2 catalysts. It was found that the addition of WO3 improved the catalytic activity, especially in the complete hydrodeoxygenation of phenol to cyclohexane. The 10%Ni/WO3-ZrO2 catalyst showed high activity and selectivity in both phenol and bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation reactions.

Summary: The research found that high acidity is beneficial for demethylation, while medium acidity may promote the cleavage of the aromatic-OCH3 bond. The higher the titania content, the stronger the catalyst's ability to produce completely deoxygenated compounds.

Catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin in ethanol/isopropanol over an activated carbon supported nickel-copper catalyst

Chongbo Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, catalytic hydrogenolysis of organosolv poplar lignin was conducted using NiCu/C catalysts in ethanol/isopropanol solvent, achieving high yields of phenolic monomers. The introduction of Cu in catalysts promoted the hydrogen donor process of the solvent and facilitated the cleavage of lignin linkages, resulting in decreased molecular weight of bio-oil. The possible lignin dimer type structures were proposed and identified by MALDI-TOF MS, providing a better understanding of NiCu/C catalyzed lignin depolymerization.

Conversion of Kraft lignin to phenol monomers and liquid fuel over trimetallic catalyst W-Ni-Mo/sepiolite under supercritical ethanol

Mingqiang Chen et al.

Summary: The highly efficient conversion of lignin to value-added liquid fuel or phenol monomers has attracted widespread attention. A W-Ni-Mo/SEP trimetallic catalyst was prepared for lignin catalytic depolymerization under supercritical ethanol, significantly improving the cycle stability and product selectivity compared to Mo/SEP. The catalyst formation increased oxygen vacancies, enhanced metal-support interaction, and reduced acid site content, leading to the production of lignin oil with higher HHV and increased selectivity to guaiacol and ethoxyphenol monomers.

Highly selective catalytic hydrocracking >CH-O- bridged bonds in an alkali lignin over Ni/Hβ

Xiao Zhou et al.

Summary: An active bifunctional nickel-based catalyst was prepared and successfully applied in the catalytic hydroconversion of alkali lignin. The soluble portions from catalytic hydroconversion showed a richer variety and higher yields of products compared to non-catalytic hydroconversion. The catalyst exhibited stability in the hydrocracking process of benzyloxybenzene.

Catalytic waste Kraft lignin hydrodeoxygenation to liquid fuels over a hollow Ni-Fe catalyst

Xiaomeng Dou et al.

Summary: The depolymerization and demethoxylation of Kraft lignin (KL) was achieved using a novel H-NiFe2O4 catalyst under mild conditions, with high liquid product yield and minimal coke yield. The catalytic performance of H-NiFe2O4 benefits from the synergy of Ni and Fe, promoting lignin depolymerization while suppressing condensation reactions. Plausible reaction pathways of KL depolymerization over H-NiFe2O4 are discussed, demonstrating the potential of this catalytic system for efficient conversion of KL into liquid fuels.

Highly efficient hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derivatives over Ni-based catalyst

Xiaokang Yue et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that flower-like Ni catalysts supported on mixed metal oxides exhibit excellent activity, mainly due to the large specific surface area of the support and strong interaction between the metal and support. By tuning the properties and composition of the catalyst, efficient hydrodeoxygenation catalysts can be constructed.

Selective cleavage of lignin-derived diphenyl ether C-O bond over weakly acidic Ni/Nb2O5 catalyst

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: Selective cleavage of stable ether C-O bonds for lignin valorization and designing high activity and cheap catalysts have attracted researchers' attention. Niobium species with Brønsted and Lewis acid sites can be used in the hydrodeoxygenation of diphenyl ether. Ni/Nb2O5 catalyst with weak acidity can efficiently cleave C-O bonds of DPE without hydrodeoxygenation, achieving a high yield of target products in the presence of H2 and isopropanol.

Hamed Taghvaei et al.

Summary: Nickel modified Al-containing MCM-41 nanoparticles were synthesized with Si/Al molar ratios ranging from 10 to 60 by direct insertion of aluminum at room temperature followed by wet impregnation. The synthesized catalysts showed tunable acidity and pore diameter, with both Ni and Al playing important roles in the hydrodeoxygenation of anisole. Phenol and benzene were the major products, with the catalyst displaying high stability and activity during 600 minutes of reaction time.

Ammonia-assisted hydrothermal carbon material with schiff base structures synthesized from factory waste hemicelluloses for Cr(VI) adsorption

Yi Wei et al.

Summary: Nitrogen doping hydrothermal carbon material (NHTC) is an important metal ion adsorbent. In this work, NHTC with Schiff base structures (NHTC-SBS) was successfully synthesized via ammonia-assisted hydrothermal treatment of industrial hemicelluloses and used for the adsorption of toxic hexavalent chromium Cr(VI). The adsorption of Cr(VI) on NHTC-SBS mainly depended on electrostatic attraction, redox, and chelation between nitrogen-containing groups (amino, Schiff base structures, heterocyclic nitrogen) and Cr(VI), with a high adsorption capacity achieved according to Langmuir isotherm model under certain conditions.
