A Process-Oriented Sustainable Livelihoods Approach-A Tool For Increased Understanding of Vulnerability, Adaptation and Resilience

Summary: The Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA) is proposed as a comprehensive method to assess livelihood vulnerability in aid and development programs. However, its full potential has rarely been utilized, lacking a clear understanding of the processes of change and flexibility of assets, as well as the ability to quantify all capital assets in a livelihood system. This study explores the use of SLA in a Chinese rural context, quantifying the different capitals covered and examining their relationships. The results highlight the potential of an analytical and process-oriented SLA as an effective tool to assess vulnerability and target poverty traps in the face of rapid and multiple changes.

Summary: The study shows that in tropical regions, farmers using a cut-and-carry system support financial resilience by limiting cash expenditures, increasing income sources, and producing assets that meet market demand. Farmers engaged in parcelized agroforestry practices have advantages in forestry cultivation and experience, while social capital assets such as membership in cash-crop cooperatives have a positive impact on managing parcelized monocrops.

Livelihood resilience to environmental changes in areas of Kenya and Cameroon: a comparative analysis

Summary: The study found significant differences in livelihood resilience between Kenyan and Cameroonian farmers using the same measures, with Cameroonian farmers being relatively more resilient. There was a significant causal relationship between farmers' resilience and livelihood capital assets in both study sites, but the key factors for building resilience differed between Isiolo County, Kenya and Northwestern Cameroon.
