Maybe it's still good? A qualitative study of factors influencing food waste and application of the EPA Food recovery hierarchy in U. S. supermarkets

Caitlin A. Ceryes et al.

Summary: The study aimed to understand the perspectives and decision-making processes of grocery retail employees and managers regarding food waste at the store level. It found that personalized discard decision-making, lack of consistent policies and training, and confusion between quality and safety indicators all impact the feasibility and effectiveness of waste reduction strategies in supermarkets. Participants considered rescuing profitable goods more feasible than other food rescue efforts like donation and composting, pointing to areas for future research and intervention.
