Poly(lactic acid)-based bionanocomposites: effects of ZnO nanoparticles and essential oils on physicochemical properties

Mojtaba Heydari-Majd et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential use of PLA/ZnO NP systems as active food packaging. The presence of ZnO NPs and essential oils (EOs) led to improved film thickness and contact angle properties. ZnO NPs increased water vapor permeability (WVP) of the films, while EOs had the opposite effect. These results suggest that ZnO-PLA films containing EOs can be used for controlled release antimicrobial food active packaging.

Influence ofNigella sativaL. Extract on Physico-Mechanical and Antimicrobial Properties of Sago Starch Film

Sima Ekramian et al.

Summary: This study found that incorporating methanol extract from Nigella sativa L. seeds significantly improved the physical, mechanical properties, and antibacterial activity of sago starch films, enhancing parameters like thickness, moisture content, water resistance, flexibility, and elasticity. This enhancement is likely attributed to the phenolic compounds present in the extract.

Summary: This study investigated active packaging based on oriented polypropylene and low-density polyethylene with thymol, and found that prolonged immersion time led to decreased tensile strength but increased elongation at break in the films. Additionally, shorter immersion time resulted in decreased transparency and increased color changes in the films.

Antimicrobial bio-nanocomposite films based on gelatin, tragacanth, and zinc oxide nanoparticles - Microstructural, mechanical, thermo-physical, and barrier properties

Rahim Shahvalizadeh et al.

Summary: The addition of 1%, 3%, and 5% zinc oxide nanoparticles to gelatin and tragacanth resulted in antimicrobial nanocomposites with increased melting point temperature, ultimate tensile strength, and Young's Modulus. These nanocomposites exhibited reduced water vapor permeability and good antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, showing promise as bio-materials for food packaging.

An experimental study on characteristics of sago starch film treated with methanol extract from Artemisia sieberi Besser

Sima Ekramian et al.

Summary: The methanol extract from Artemisia sieberi significantly enhanced the physical properties of sago starch film, including water solubility, water absorption capacity, and water vapor permeability, with increasing concentration. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of the incorporated films were lower compared to control films, while elasticity increased with concentration. The films exhibited good antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

The effects of methylcellulose coating containing carvacrol or menthol on the physicochemical, mechanical, and antimicrobial activity of polyethylene films

Elahe Jahdkaran et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the concentration of menthol and carvacrol in PE film coatings can reduce the mechanical properties of the film and increase oxygen permeability, while also enhancing antimicrobial activity. Therefore, PE film coatings can be used as active antimicrobial packaging materials in the food packaging industry.
