Bovine Colostrum: Its Constituents and Uses

Raymond John Playford et al.

Summary: Colostrum is the milk produced in the first few days after birth, containing high levels of immunoglobulins, antimicrobial peptides, and growth factors that are important for supporting growth, development, and immunologic defense. Numerous studies have shown therapeutic benefits of bovine colostrum for maintaining wellbeing, treating medical conditions, and in animal husbandry.

Summary: The research found that diseases occurring before weaning have some long-term effects on the production and reproductive performance of replacement heifers, but have limited impact on the time to achieve critical reproductive performance indicators.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of Bovine coronavirus, Bovine rotavirus, and Cryptosporidium parvum on dairy calf health and performance. The prevalence of these pathogens significantly affected the incidence of diarrhea and body weight gain in calves.

Nutraceutical intervention with colostrum replacer: Can we reduce disease hazard, ameliorate disease severity, and improve performance in preweaned dairy calves?

Summary: This study suggests that colostrum replacer may reduce the likelihood of bovine respiratory disease in dairy calves, but does not affect growth in calves receiving high levels of milk.
