Predicting spread and effective control measures for African swine fever-Should we blame the boars?

Rachel A. Taylor et al.

Summary: African swine fever (ASF) has been spreading in Europe and Asia since its initial identification in Georgia in 2007, with wild boars identified as one of the main drivers of transmission within Europe. A spatially explicit model was developed to estimate the risk of ASF infection in wild boars and pigs due to natural wild boar movement, showing that wild boar movement is responsible for local transmission of the disease.

Joining the club: First detection of African swine fever in wild boar in Germany

Carola Sauter-Louis et al.

Summary: African swine fever (ASF) has spread across Europe since its introduction in 2007, with the first cases detected in wild boar near the Germany-Poland border. The movement of infected wild boar represents a potential route of introduction, in addition to human activities.

A Review of Risk Factors of African Swine Fever Incursion in Pig Farming within the European Union Scenario

Silvia Bellini et al.

Summary: Different pig farming systems in the European Union have their own specific risk factors for African swine fever, with commercial farms facing unintentional biosecurity breaches and backyard/outdoor farms lacking ASF awareness and being at risk due to sociocultural factors and wild boar contact. Human-related activities and behaviors are highlighted as the main risks, emphasizing the need for tailored biosecurity measures for different pig farming practices.

With or without a Vaccine-A Review of Complementary and Alternative Approaches to Managing African Swine Fever in Resource-Constrained Smallholder Settings

Mary-Louise Penrith et al.

Summary: The recent spread of African swine fever (ASF) in Eastern Europe and Asia has been strongly associated with free-ranging pig populations and low-biosecurity backyard pig farming. Managing the disease in wild boar populations and in circumstances where the disease in domestic pigs is largely driven by poverty is particularly challenging. Strict biosecurity remains the only option to prevent ASF outbreaks.

Summary: African swine fever virus (ASFV) is causing devastating losses to the swine industry, but there is currently no commercial vaccine available. A newly developed ASF vaccine can replicate efficiently in stable porcine cell cultures while maintaining protective efficacy.

Modelling the Spatial Distribution of ASF-Positive Wild Boar Carcasses in South Korea Using 2019-2020 National Surveillance Data

Jun-Sik Lim et al.

Summary: This study used national surveillance data of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boars in South Korea from 2019-2020 to model the spatial distribution of ASF-positive carcasses during two study periods. Risk factors for ASF presence included proximity to North Korea, habitat suitability for wild boars, heat load index, and human density. The study highlights the need for improved surveillance strategies to control the spread of ASF in South Korea.
