Phylogenetic Relationships of Flounders from the Family Pleuronectidae (Ostichties: Pleuronectiformes) Based on 16S rRNA Gene

A. D. Redin et al.

Summary: The systematics and phylogeny of flatfish were investigated using nucleotide sequences, showing similar topology among four types of gene trees. The Pleuronectinae subfamily was confirmed as monophyletic, with support from separate branches on the trees.

Evolution, systematics, and the unnatural history of mitochondrial DNA

Summary: The fundamental principles underlying the use of mtDNA in phylogenetic and systematic analyses are strict maternal inheritance, clonality, homoplasmy, and differences due to mutation. Despite early studies showing evidence of paternal mtDNA transmission and other phenomena, the traditional concept of mtDNA as strictly maternally inherited has persisted and impacted systematic and phylogenetic analysis of mtDNA sequences.
