Wing plasticity and associated gene expression varies across the pea aphid biotype complex

Benjamin J. Parker et al.

Summary: Research on wing plasticity in multiple host-plant adapted populations of pea aphids reveals differences in plasticity response between biotypes in crowded environments. Transcriptome profiling comparing highly plastic pea aphid genotypes with non-plastic genotypes shows that the latter exhibit no gene expression differences between environments, indicating genetic assimilation has occurred. This study underscores the correlation between plasticity in morphology and gene expression.

Sex-specific expression and DNA methylation in a species with extreme sexual dimorphism and paternal genome elimination

Stevie A. Bain et al.

Summary: The mealybug, Planococcus citri, displays extreme sexual dimorphism and exhibits an unusual instance of sex-specific genomic imprinting, paternal genome elimination (PGE). Genome-wide differences in DNA methylation between male and female P. citri were identified, with males displaying overall higher levels of DNA methylation and females displaying more targeted high levels of methylation. These sex-specific differences are due to chromosomal differences caused by PGE and may be linked to possible ploidy compensation.

The UDP-Glycosyltransferase Family in Drosophila melanogaster: Nomenclature Update, Gene Expression and Phylogenetic Analysis

Seung-Joon Ahn et al.

Summary: UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) are important conjugation enzymes found in all kingdoms of life, catalyzing sugar conjugation with small lipophilic compounds. The UGT gene family in Drosophila melanogaster includes 35 genes located on chromosomes 2 and 3, with high gene duplications on chromosome arm 3R. Analysis of UGT gene expression patterns in various tissues and after environmental treatments reveal differential expression, and extended searches of UGT orthologs from additional Drosophila species show a diversity in gene numbers and composition.

Evolution of sexual development and sexual dimorphism in insects

Ben R. Hopkins et al.

Summary: Most animal species have two distinct sexes, with significant differences in morphology, physiology, and behavior between males and females. However, these differences are often minor or even absent at the genomic level. The evolution of sexual dimorphism in insects involves rapidly evolving and highly conserved elements in sex determination and differentiation systems.
