Simulation of aerosol transmission on a Boeing 737 airplane with intervention measures for COVID-19 mitigation

Khaled Talaat et al.

Summary: Identifying economically viable intervention measures to reduce COVID-19 transmission on aircraft is crucial, especially with the emergence of new SARS-CoV2 variants. Using computational simulations, it was found that employing sneeze shields on full capacity flights can significantly reduce aerosol transmission compared to reduced capacity flights without shields.

Transmission of COVID-19 virus by cough-induced particles in an airliner cabin section

Yihuan Yan et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigated the transmission of COVID-19 by cough-induced particles in an airliner cabin environment, revealing that cough flow released by passengers could rapidly develop into a strong turbulent cough jet, with particles dominated by the cough jet within the first 1.5 seconds, especially when released by window-seat passengers. Small particles released by window-seat passengers were more likely to spread widely, posing the highest exposure risks to nearby passengers.
