Merlin-Deficient Schwann Cells Are More Susceptible to Radiation Injury than Normal Schwann Cells In Vitro

Erin Cohen et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the different responses of normal SCs and MD-SCs to radiation, with results showing that MD-SCs are more susceptible to radiation, possibly due to differential expression of gamma-H2AX and Rad51.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery for Vestibular Schwannomas: Tumor Control Probability Analyses and Recommended Reporting Standards

Scott G. Soltys et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the tumor control probability of vestibular schwannomas after single-fraction stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) or hypofractionated SRS over 2 to 5 fractions. Data extraction revealed that with specific doses of SRS treatment, the tumor control probability for vestibular schwannoma patients could exceed 91% within 3 to 5 years. For hypofractionated SRS, it is recommended to use specific doses in fractions for better treatment outcomes.

Primary Vestibular Schwannoma Cells Activate p21 and RAD51-Associated DNA Repair Following Radiation-Induced DNA Damage

Torin P. Thielhelm et al.

Summary: In response to radiation-induced DNA damage, primary VS cells can enter cell cycle arrest and express RAD51 DNA repair mechanisms to avoid cell death. Radioresistant VS cells may mount a more robust p21 response to ensure sufficient time for DNA repair. Further investigation into DNA repair proteins and cell cycle checkpoints may provide important insight on the radiobiology of VS and mechanisms for resistance.

The biological underpinnings of radiation therapy for vestibular schwannomas: Review of the literature

Mark C. Dougherty et al.

Summary: Radiation therapy is a mainstay in treating many tumors, including Vestibular Schwannomas (VS), with good clinical outcomes reported. However, due to limited pathologic specimens available for evaluation post-radiation, research on cellular mechanisms underlying radiation effects on VS is lacking. Despite VS's radioresistance, radiotherapy can effectively halt their growth. Understanding these mechanisms may enhance clinical effects of radiotherapy on VS in the future.
