Performance of the faecal immunochemical test for the detection of colorectal neoplasms and the role of proton pump inhibitors in their diagnostic accuracy

Subashini Chandrapalan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of FIT in detecting colorectal neoplasms, finding it to be a good rule-out test at lower thresholds. The results showed that PPI therapy did not have a significant effect on the diagnostic performance of FIT.

Proton-pump inhibitors are associated with a high false-positivity rate in faecal immunochemical testing

Gemma Ibanez-Sanz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between proton pump inhibitors (PPI) consumption and false positive (FP) results in a colorectal cancer (CRC) screening program using electronic prescription records. The results showed that PPI exposure increased the probability of obtaining an FP FIT result, especially when in synergy with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The recommendation to avoid PPI use before FIT performance could help reduce the number of colonoscopies and FP results.
