The Impact of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Associated Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OPSCC) on Nutritional Outcomes

Jane Harrowfield et al.

Summary: This study compared the nutritional outcomes of HPV-positive and negative OPSCC patients undergoing (chemo) radiotherapy, finding that although HPV-positive patients were less likely to be malnourished at the beginning of treatment, the difference in malnutrition rates between the two groups did not significantly differ over the course of treatment. Additionally, HPV-positive patients were significantly more likely to experience >10% weight loss at three months post-treatment. Both HPV-positive and negative patients require intense nutritional intervention during and after treatment, with HPV-positive patients potentially needing more intense intervention during acute recovery. Ongoing nutritional support is essential for both groups at 3 months post-treatment.
