Treatment of age-related macular degeneration after cataract surgery: a study from the Swedish National Cataract and Macula Registers

Inger Westborg et al.

Summary: Factors such as gender and age are associated with the likelihood of receiving treatment for wet AMD after cataract surgery, with females and older patients being more likely to undergo treatment. The use of a blue-blocking IOL may slightly decrease the likelihood of subsequent wet AMD treatment, although the effect is not statistically significant.

Comparison of the Visual Performance after Implantation of Three Aberration-correcting Aspherical Intraocular Lens

Summary: After implantation of different types of intraocular lenses, visual acuity and contrast sensitivity were comparable, but using a non-constant aberration intraocular lens can reduce ocular coma and improve intraocular stray light.

A Comparative Evaluation of Diffractive Trifocal and New Refractive/Extended Depth of Focus Intraocular Lenses for Refractive Lens Exchange

Kemal Ozulken et al.

Summary: The study compared the visual performance and quality of life associated with two types of intraocular lenses, EDOF and trifocal IOLs, in refractive lens exchange patients. Results showed satisfactory refractive outcomes and visual acuities for both lens types, with EDOF design in the Lucidis IOL achieving lower rates of glare in the early period after surgery.

Comparison of two extended depth of focus intraocular lenses with a monofocal lens: a multi-centre randomised trial

Thomas Reinhard et al.

Summary: The study found that AT LARA 829MP provided the widest monocular depth of focus at all distances, while TECNIS Symfony was superior to the monofocal control at 0.3 logMAR. Both EDOF intraocular lenses were significantly better than the monofocal ASPHINA at all levels for binocular depth of focus.

Patient management modifications in cataract surgery candidates following incorporation of routine preoperative macular optical coherence tomography

Yishay Weill et al.

Summary: This study assessed the clinical relevance of routine preoperative SD-OCT scanning for identifying macular pathologies in patients scheduled for cataract surgery. The results showed that routine SD-OCT scans can help identify macular pathologies that might be missed or underestimated by standard fundus bio-microscopic examination, potentially improving patient management.

Visual outcomes following cataract surgery in age-related macular degeneration patients

Andrew X. Chen et al.

Summary: Cataract surgery can improve visual acuity for patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), although not to the level of those without retinal pathology. Prognostic factors for cataract surgery in AMD patients include preoperative visual acuity, duration of AMD, and optical coherence tomography parameters.

Causes of blindness and vision impairment in 2020 and trends over 30 years, and prevalence of avoidable blindness in relation to VISION 2020: the Right to Sight: an analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study

Jaimie D. Steinmetz et al.

Summary: The study assessed the prevalence and relative contribution of avoidable causes of blindness and vision impairment globally from 1990 to 2020, finding that there was no change in the global prevalence of avoidable blindness and vision impairment in adults aged 50 and older. Although the age-standardized prevalence of avoidable blindness decreased, avoidable moderate and severe vision impairment did not change.
