The association of D-dimers with mortality, intensive care unit admission or acute respiratory distress syndrome in patients hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): A systematic review and meta-analysis

Agam Bansal et al.

Summary: This study found through meta-analysis that patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 and elevated D-dimers tended to have worse clinical outcomes including all-cause mortality, ICU admission or ARDS, suggesting that measuring D-dimers can guide clinical decision making.

Neutrophils and COVID-19: The road so far

Luiz Henrique Agra Cavalcante-Silva et al.

Summary: COVID-19, triggered by SARS-Cov2 infection, is a multisystem inflammatory disorder characterized by acute respiratory distress syndrome, cytokine-driven hyper inflammation, and leukocytes count changes. Neutrophils have been identified as essential effector cells in the development of COVID-19, utilizing mechanisms such as neutrophil enzymes, cytokines, and neutrophil extracellular traps. This review summarizes significant findings regarding neutrophils and their effector mechanisms in COVID-19.

The impact of charlson comorbidity index on mortality from SARS-CoV-2 virus infection and A novel COVID-19 mortality index: CoLACD

Yelda Varol et al.

Summary: This study aims to identify potential risk factors associated with death in COVID-19 patients hospitalized due to pneumonia, and to develop a novel COVID-19 mortality score. The CoLACD scoring model, based on CCI and lymphocyte ratio, was shown to be an effective tool for predicting mortality in COVID-19 patients.

Systemic Inflammation and COVID-19 Mortality in Patients with Major Noncommunicable Diseases: Chronic Coronary Syndromes, Diabetes and Obesity

Andreea-Luciana Buicu et al.

Summary: COVID-19 is considered an inflammatory disease that can lead to a cytokine storm and multi-organ damage. Chronic inflammatory conditions like chronic coronary diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity play a significant role in the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 patients, with a potential for worsened prognosis.

The Impact of Increased Fib-4 Score in Patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus on COVID-19 Disease Prognosis

Ovidiu P. Calapod et al.

Summary: Patients with high FIB-4 scores have poor clinical outcomes and liver fibrosis may play a significant role in prognosis. Independent predictors for developing severe forms of COVID-19 include obesity, elevated ferritin levels, and FIB-4 >= 3.25.

Early Elevation of Fibrosis-4 Liver Fibrosis Score Is Associated With Adverse Outcomes Among Patients With Coronavirus Disease 2019

Fangfei Xiang et al.

Summary: This study found that FIB-4 values during early-stage COVID-19 infection are independently and dose-dependently associated with adverse outcomes during hospitalization. Patients with FIB-4 values greater than 3.25 have a higher risk of high-flow oxygen use and progression to severe disease.

Liver Fibrosis Index FIB-4 Is Associated With Mortality in COVID-19

Yijia Li et al.

Summary: The study found that FIB-4 score is associated with mortality in COVID-19 hospitalized patients, with each unit increase in FIB-4 score linked to higher risk of death. FIB-4 score peaked and then normalized in the survivor group but failed to do so in the deceased group. Furthermore, FIB-4 was positively correlated with SARS-CoV-2 viral load and monocyte-associated cytokines, particularly interleukin-6 and interferon gamma-induced protein 10.
