The structural basis of accelerated host cell entry by SARS-CoV-2†

Murat Seyran et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 utilizes its S protein to rapidly enter cells, sliding quickly with the flat sialic acid-binding domain in the N-terminal domain interacting with the epithelial layer, and entering via the ACE-2 receptor. The binding between viral RBD and ACE-2 may be optimal, and protein enzymes can accelerate cell entry by SARS-CoV-2.

Summary: This study utilized real-time EAB sensors to monitor plasma phenylalanine levels in live animals, revealing previously unreported metabolic response phases. By analyzing hundreds of individual measurements, inter-subject variability, including significant differences related to feeding status, was identified. This approach has significant implications for understanding physiology and monitoring and treating metabolic disorders.

Comparison of the binding characteristics of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 RBDs to ACE2 at different temperatures by MD simulations

Fang-Fang Yan et al.

Summary: The study showed that at different temperatures, the structure of SARS-CoV-2 RBD was more stable and had stronger binding ability to ACE2 compared to SARS-CoV RBD, mainly due to electrostatic and polar interactions. Additionally, the key differential residues and their interaction mechanisms at various temperatures were analyzed and compared in depth.

Optical Detection of CoV-SARS-2 Viral Proteins to Sub-Picomolar Concentrations

Tamsyn Stanborough et al.

Summary: The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 in late 2019 led to a global pandemic in 2020, highlighting the need for more effective ways of detecting viral infections. This study investigated three optical techniques for quantifying the binding of recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to surface-immobilized oligonucleotide aptamers, with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy showing the highest sensitivity for detecting spike protein. These results demonstrate the potential of SERS-based aptasensors for rapid, point-of-use antigen detection systems.

Comparison of seven commercial SARS-CoV-2 rapid point-of-care antigen tests: a single-centre laboratory evaluation study

Victor M. Corman et al.

Summary: This study compared the analytical sensitivity and specificity of seven commercially available antigen point-of-care test devices, showing that most devices have sensitivity overlapping with SARS-CoV-2 viral loads typically observed during the first week of symptoms, marking the infectious period in most patients. Antigen point-of-care tests with detection limits approximating virus concentrations at which patients are infectious may streamline decision-making in healthcare and public health.
