The nature of active sites for carbon dioxide electroreduction over oxide-derived copper catalysts

Dongfang Cheng et al.

Summary: This study reveals the active sites for CO2 electroreduction over oxide-derived copper (OD-Cu) catalysts, identifying square-like sites responsible for specific products. Planar and convex square sites are found to be responsible for ethylene production, while the step square site favors alcohols generation, providing fundamental insights into the origin of activity and selectivity over Cu-based catalysts.

Dynamic Boundary Layer Simulation of Pulsed CO2 Electrolysis on a Copper Catalyst

Justin C. Bui et al.

Summary: The study found that pulsed electrolysis induces dynamic changes in pH and CO2 concentration near the Cu surface, leading to an enhanced faradaic efficiency of C2+ products. By exploring various pulse shapes, operating conditions that maximize the rate of C2+ product formation while minimizing the rates of other products formation can be established.

Symmetry-Broken Au-Cu Heterostructures and their Tandem Catalysis Process in Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Henglei Jia et al.

Summary: A general strategy is developed to synthesize asymmetric Au-Cu hybrid nanostructures, achieving significantly improved performance in electrocatalysis. The excellent electrocatalytic performances are attributed to the special design of the Au-Cu Janus architectures, tandem catalysis mechanism, and high-index facets on Au nanocrystals. This research provides a new approach to synthesize various hybrid Janus nanostructures, facilitating the study of structure-function relationship in the catalytic process and the rational design of efficient heterogeneous electrocatalysts.

Tandem catalysis in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction

Yating Zhu et al.

Summary: Electrochemical CO2 reduction through tandem catalysis has shown promise in enhancing efficiency, with limitations primarily due to high overpotential and poor selectivity in producing highly reduced carbon compounds. Recent advances in tandem catalysis for CO2RR have provided effective methods to improve performance, indicating potential for further research and development.

Summary: This study elucidates the active sites for ethanol production on Cu-Ag CO2RR tandem catalysts using structural sensitivity effects, showing how ethanol and ethylene formation pathways exhibit selectivity differences in a CO-enriched environment. The findings highlight the potential of tandem catalysis and structure-sensitive effects to significantly alter the selectivity of electrochemical reactions.

The role of atomic carbon in directing electrochemical CO(2) reduction to multicarbon products

Hongjie Peng et al.

Summary: By combining density functional theory and micro-kinetic modeling, we identified the critical steps for forming C-2 products on copper and elucidated the importance of atomic carbon in guiding C2+ selectivity. We proposed two simple thermodynamic descriptors that effectively determine C2+ selectivity on metal catalysts, providing a clear protocol for screening materials that selectively catalyze CO(2) to C2+ products.
