Summary: The physical basis of consciousness is a elusive concept, with integrated information theory linking a multi-dimensional information structure to the contents of experience in a system. This study in fruit flies suggests that the information structure can be more informative about the level of arousal in a system than even the single-value summary proposed by the theory itself.
