Investigation of microstructural attributes of steel surfaces through magneto-optical Kerr effect

M. Jovicevic-Klug et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using MOKE microscopy to analyze the microstructure and stress state of martensitic steels, without the need for chemical etching, and even achieving accurate volumetric fraction estimation of retained austenite. By combining MOKE microscopy with other techniques, the residual stress state of steel can be accurately determined, and significant reduction in residual stresses can be achieved through deep cryogenic treatment, providing valuable insights for steel properties research.

Effect of deep cryogenic treatment on surface chemistry and microstructure of selected high-speed steels

Patricia Jovicevic-Klug et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the effects of deep cryogenic treatment on AISI M2, M3:2, and M35 steels using various techniques. It was found that DCT samples had sharper, smaller martensitic laths and significantly impacted the microstructure. The evaluation of surface oxidation states and oxygen absorbance in high-speed steels, along with depth profile XPS analysis, provided further insight into the dynamic effects of DCT on the overall microstructure and surface behavior of the selected steels.

Optimized preparation of deep cryogenic treated steel and Al-alloy samples for optimal microstructure imaging results

P. Jovicevic-Klug et al.

Summary: This research investigates the effect of different etchants on the microstructure of tool steels and aluminum alloys, providing guidelines for the in-depth observation of microstructure in metallographic samples prepared through cryogenic processing. Optimal etching reagents were found to vary for the same materials under different processing conditions.
