Study of Active Janus Particles in the Presence of an Engineered Oil-Water Interface

Priyanka Sharan et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the motion of Pt@SiO2 Janus particles at a liquid-liquid interface, finding that the propulsion behavior on both oil-water and solid-water interfaces is quantitatively similar. The motion characteristics are controlled by factors such as reaction product absorption by oil, slip locking by surfactant, and potential Marangoni effect.

Active spheres induce Marangoni flows that drive collective dynamics

Martin Wittmann et al.

Summary: The experiment with spherically symmetric active TiO2 particles at an oil-water interface confirmed that collective dynamics can arise from activity-induced gradients, leading to long-ranged Marangoni flows even when particles are not self-propelled. The addition of a nonionic surfactant was shown to influence the emergence of collective motion, with dynamics dependent on particle coverage in the monolayer. The experimental observations were discussed within a simple theoretical mean-field model.

Active colloids orbiting giant vesicles

Vaibhav Sharma et al.

Summary: The study reveals that active particles exhibit persistent orbital motion around giant lipid vesicles, independent of the sizes of the particles and vesicles. Additionally, force and torque transfers between the active particles and vesicles are described in the experimental investigation. These findings differ from recent reports on interactions between active particles and solid spheres or liquid drops, and may have implications for understanding the interactions of swimming particles with cells in biology or with microplastics in environmental science.
