Reconciling bubble nucleation in explosive eruptions with geospeedometers

Sahand Hajimirza et al.

Summary: Plinian volcanic eruptions contain a large number of bubbles due to nucleation caused by magma decompression and volatile diffusion. Bubble number density serves as a proxy record of decompression rate and eruption dynamics intensity. By modeling bubble nucleation, it is shown that BND provides a consistent record of time-averaged decompression rate if nucleation is heterogeneous and facilitated by magnetite crystals.

The morphology and texture of Plinian pyroclasts reflect their lateral sourcing in the conduit

Kathleen R. Trafton et al.

Summary: Our study found that the size, shape, density, and texture of Plinian pyroclasts are closely related and influenced by the position of the magma in the conduit before fragmentation. Additionally, a portion of smaller-sized pyroclasts may have formed as agglomerates within the conduit during or after primary fragmentation.

Microscale textural heterogeneity and tip-streaming instability in alkaline magmas: Evidence in tube pumices from Campi Flegrei, Italy

Monica Piochi et al.

Summary: The study examines the textural complexity of alkaline tube pumices from a volcanic eruption in Italy, revealing the presence of large vesicle tubes, elongated vesicles, and sub-spherical vesicles associated with mineral phenocrysts. The analysis of Capillary number values suggests variations in magma strain-rate and rheology before fragmentation, with high values indicating bubble-breakup induced by tip-streaming. This research highlights the importance of micrometric heterogeneities for understanding magma dynamics and fragmentation processes.
