Ghosts of landuse past: legacy effects of milldams for riparian nitrogen (N) processing and water quality functions

Shreeram Inamdar et al.

Summary: Milldams and their legacies have significant impacts on fluvial processes and geomorphology, but their effects on riparian nitrogen processing are less understood. The potential effects of existing and breached milldams on riparian nitrogen cycling are uncertain and require further investigation.

Hysteresis Patterns of Watershed Nitrogen Retention and Loss Over the Past 50 years in United States Hydrological Basins

Michelle E. Newcomer et al.

Summary: The patterns of watershed nitrogen retention and loss are influenced by various factors including atmospheric deposition, vegetation trends, and stream trends. The study identified two patterns of watershed nitrogen retention and loss, a hysteresis pattern and a one-way transition to a new state. Regions with increasing atmospheric deposition and vegetation health patterns have higher nitrogen retention capacity and experience declines in stream nitrogen exports.

Chesapeake legacies: the importance of legacy nitrogen to improving Chesapeake Bay water quality

S. Y. Chang et al.

Summary: Efforts to reduce nitrogen inputs in the Chesapeake Bay have shown some progress, with recent improvements in water quality attributed to decreases in nitrogen surplus magnitudes. Despite slow improvement, goals to reduce nitrogen loads by 25% across the region may be met within the next two decades even with no additional changes in current management practices. Time lags in achieving water quality goals may vary across different watersheds, with the longest delays seen in highly agricultural areas where legacy nitrogen continues to impact water quality.
