Arctic Ozone Depletion in 2019/20: Roles of Chemistry, Dynamics and the Montreal Protocol

Wuhu Feng et al.

Summary: Using a three-dimensional chemical transport model and satellite observations, researchers investigated the Arctic ozone depletion in winter/spring 2019/20 and compared it with previous years. Persistently low temperatures led to extensive chlorine activation, while weak dynamical replenishment played a key role in causing very low column ozone values in the region. The study also showed that the gradual recovery of the ozone layer over the past two decades alleviated the polar cap ozone depletion in March 2020 by around 20 DU.

Climate change favours large seasonal loss of Arctic ozone

Peter von der Gathen et al.

Summary: The chemical loss of Arctic ozone due to anthropogenic halogens is driven by temperature, with more loss occurring during cold winters favorable for the formation of polar stratospheric clouds. Data and GCM outputs indicate a positive trend in the potential for PSC formation in cold winters, with conditions potentially worsening until the end of the century due to rising GHG concentrations. Despite bans on ozone-depleting substances, Arctic ozone depletion during cold winters has been increasing, and could worsen in response to continued release of GHGs.

Simulation of Record Arctic Stratospheric Ozone Depletion in 2020

Summary: In the Arctic winter/spring of 2019/2020, due to very stable polar vortex and exceptionally low stratospheric temperatures until early April, significant chemical ozone depletion occurred. Despite a decrease of more than 10% in chlorine and bromine compounds compared to peak values around 2000, unprecedented ozone depletion was caused by meteorological conditions in winter/spring 2019/2020.

Record low ozone values over the Arctic in boreal spring 2020

Summary: The ozone data from TROPOMI on the Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite showed exceptionally low total ozone columns in the Arctic during spring 2020, likely due to a strong polar vortex and cold stratosphere. This situation was compared to 1997 and 2011, showing that 2020 was especially unique.
