Existence of Multiple ESBL Genes among Phenotypically Confirmed ESBL Producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli Concurrently Isolated from Clinical, Colonization and Contamination Samples from Neonatal Units at Bugando Medical Center, Mwanza, Tanzania

Vitus Silago et al.

Summary: This study investigated the existence of multiple ESBL genes among ESBL-KP and ESBL-EC concurrently isolated from neonatology units in Mwanza-Tanzania. Results showed that the majority of presumptive ESBL bacteria expressed at least one ESBL gene, with a high percentage carrying multiple ESBL genes. Furthermore, eight pairs of ESBL isolates exhibited similar antibiotic susceptibility patterns and ESBL genes, indicating potential transmission and sharing of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) between ESBL-KP and ESBL-EC.

Wide Distribution and Specific Resistance Pattern to Third-Generation Cephalosporins of Enterobacter cloacae Complex Members in Humans and in the Environment in Guadeloupe (French West Indies)

Matthieu Pot et al.

Summary: This study compared the distribution and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Enterobacter cloacae complex members from different sources, revealing a relatively high third-generation cephalosporins resistance rate in non-human samples with AmpC overproduction mechanism, contrasting with human samples where most resistant strains produced an extended-spectrum beta-lactamase. Wild lizard isolates did not show relation to human activities. Phylogenetic analysis showed diverse mutations responsible for resistance to 3GCs, suggesting environmental factors play a role in selecting resistant strains.
