Poly(ionic liquid)-crosslinked graphene oxide/carbon nanotube membranes as efficient solar steam generators

Jiangjin Han et al.

Summary: Graphene oxide (GO) is a promising candidate for solar absorbers to address freshwater crisis, but its easy delamination in water poses a challenge for practical solar desalination. By using a self-crosslinking poly (ionic liquid) (PIL), the stability of GO membranes is improved without affecting the hydrophilic structure of GO. The addition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) further enhances the stability of the GO/CNT@PIL (GCP) membrane and reduces water evaporation enthalpy, resulting in a high evaporation rate and long-time durability under irradiation. The GCP membrane also works well with different water sources and shows potential for practical solar seawater desalination.

Converting poly(ethylene terephthalate) waste into N-doped porous carbon as CO2 adsorbent and solar steam generator

Changyuan Song et al.

Summary: This study proposes a strategy for the sustainable conversion of waste plastics into valuable carbon materials. By stepwise crosslinking, waste polyesters are transformed into nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NPC) with well-defined microstructures. The NPC exhibits excellent performance in CO2 capture and solar steam generation, making it a promising material for solar energy conversion and environmental protection.

Same materials, bigger output: A reversibly transformable 2D-3D photothermal evaporator for highly efficient solar steam generation

Yida Wang et al.

Summary: A transformable photothermal evaporator is designed to switch between 2D flat and 3D spiral structures, demonstrating significantly enhanced evaporation rate and optimized water transportation. The 3D spiral structure takes advantage of convective flow to fully activate and enhance evaporation, resulting in a much higher evaporation rate compared to the 2D flat structure.

Confinement Capillarity of Thin Coating for Boosting Solar-Driven Water Evaporation

Zhenxing Wang et al.

Summary: Using confinement capillarity on porous sponge with photothermal thin coating is an effective way to enhance solar-driven water evaporation rate. The formation of ultrathin water layer can increase evaporation area and prevent excessive water heating, significantly improving the rate of solar steam generation. Photothermal materials with confinement capillarity possess high evaporation rate and anti-salt-accumulation property.
