Vitamin B6 deficiency hyperactivates the noradrenergic system, leading to social deficits and cognitive impairment

Kazuya Toriumi et al.

Summary: A subpopulation of schizophrenia patients have been found to have lower levels of vitamin B-6 (VB6), which may contribute to symptom severity. Using a VB6-deficient mouse model, research revealed that VB6 deficiency enhances noradrenergic activity leading to behavioral deficits, which could be ameliorated by treatment with VB6 supplementation and alpha 2A adrenergic receptor agonist guanfacine.
