All-dielectric multifunctional transmittance-tunable metasurfaces based on guided-mode resonance and ENZ effect

Summary: Electrically tunable all-dielectric metasurface structures have been proposed in this study, combining indium tin oxide with guided-mode resonance to disturb the resonance wavelength in the near-infrared spectral range. The research found that in a one-dimensional structure, the transmittances at 1512 and 1510 nm changed by 20 and -14 dB, respectively, under bias voltages of 0 to 5 V, with the bilayer structure performing well in double-waveband applications.

Stoichiometry-modulated dual epsilon-near-zero characteristics of niobium nitride films

Summary: Metal nitride NbNx films with different nitrogen content were prepared and demonstrated stoichiometry-tunable on lattice constant, chemical state, and plasmonic properties. The films exhibit dual ENZ behavior in the range of 400 to 1000 nm, with tunable negative real part of epsilon below 1.0. Non-stoichiometric defects, particularly cation vacancies, were found to be key factors affecting the ENZ behavior of NbNx films.

An Epsilon-Near-Zero (ENZ) Based, Ultra-Wide Bandwidth Terahertz Single-Polarization Single-Mode Photonic Crystal Fiber

Summary: A novel terahertz photonic crystal fiber is designed to achieve single-polarization single-mode propagation over an ultra-wide bandwidth. By introducing specific structures and materials, the designed fiber exhibits large loss difference values greater than 9.4 dB/cm, covering a spectrum of 0.64 THz, the widest achieved to date in the field of terahertz communications.

Summary: The cutoff frequency of a photonic crystal composed of metal rods and an epsilon-near-zero material background is independent of the volume fraction and is equal to the plasma frequency of the metal rod. This phenomenon is due to the extremely long wavelength of light in an epsilon-near-zero material.

Broadband terahertz wave generation from an epsilon-near-zero material

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of generating broadband terahertz radiation through surface optical rectification on a simple 19 nm-thick indium tin oxide thin film. The enhancement of the generated terahertz signal is observed when the pump laser is tuned around the epsilon-near-zero region of the film. This work opens up new avenues for broadening the bandwidth of terahertz generation in subwavelength thin films made of ENZ materials.

Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Responses of Layered Epsilon-near-Zero Metamaterials at Visible Frequencies

Summary: This study demonstrates the strong nonlinear optical properties of an optical ENZ metamaterial, showing that the nonlinear enhancement is proportional to the linear effective refractive index. In contrast to homogeneous ENZ materials, these metamaterials offer greater tunability and can be designed with large nonlinearities at any specified optical wavelength within the visible spectrum.
