This study is a systematic review on urban resilience assessment, aiming to understand the characteristics, dimensions, and methods involved in current assessments. Recommendations for future assessments were provided, including more holistic evaluations and a unified framing based on urban resilience characteristics.
As the frequency and severity of climate-related disasters increases, understanding how to improve urban resilience has become an important area of research. The first step in improving urban resilience to climaterelated disasters is the assessment of current levels of resilience. Through a systematic review, this study aims to answer the following questions about current urban resilience assessment: 1) what are the most common characteristics of urban resilience; 2) what are the most commonly involved dimensions of urban ecosystems; and 3) what are most frequently applied methods. This study concludes by providing recommendations for future resilience assessments, including the employment of more holistic assessments for urban ecosystems as a whole and in parts and a unifying framing based on urban resilience characteristics for comparing resilience assessments across studies. This review of current resilience assessment literature can be a starting point for scholars and practitioners to optimize resilience assessments and, in turn, improve urban resilience.
