Wheat yield gaps across smallholder farming systems in Ethiopia

Joao Vasco Silva et al.

Summary: Increasing wheat yields in Ethiopia is crucial to reduce import dependency and keep up with population growth and dietary changes. The majority of the yield gap is attributed to the technology yield gap, but narrowing this gap along with efficiency and resource yield gaps could nearly double actual yields and help achieve wheat self-sufficiency in the country. By prioritizing accessibility and affordability of inputs and dissemination of precise technologies, government policies can support the increase in wheat production.

Agronomic analysis of nitrogen performance indicators in intensive arable cropping systems: An appraisal of big data from commercial farms

Joao Vasco Silva et al.

Summary: Nitrogen management is crucial for farmers to balance production, economic, and environmental aspects on their farms. Research in northwest Europe shows that most crops are within the recommended nitrogen efficiency and surplus targets, but there are still opportunities to improve performance on some under-performing farms through reducing nitrogen inputs. Further studies are recommended to explore the benefits of organic fertilizers from a circularity perspective and to validate crop-specific results at a broader cropping systems level.
