Mesenchymal Stem Cells Ameliorate Cuprizone-Induced Demyelination by Targeting Oxidative Stress and Mitochondrial Dysfunction

Elham Shiri et al.

Summary: The transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is shown to alleviate demyelination in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS) by promoting antioxidant response, reducing oxidative stress, and improving mitochondrial homeostasis. This results in increased myelinated areas and fibers, as well as a decrease in astrogliosis and microgliosis in the corpus callosum. Furthermore, MSC therapy reverses the effects of copper chelator-induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in MS.

Summary: Treatment with BMSCs over-expressing miR-23b in an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis mouse model demonstrated better therapeutic effects in inhibiting inflammation and delaying disease progression, possibly through modulating the Th17/Treg cell ratio and slowing spinal cord demyelination.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis A Review

Marisa P. McGinley et al.

Summary: Multiple sclerosis is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the central nervous system, leading to physical disability, cognitive impairment and decreased quality of life. Current disease-modifying therapies can reduce relapse rates by 29% to 68% compared to placebo or active comparators.

Chronic Demyelination and Axonal Degeneration in Multiple Sclerosis: Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Implications

Tyrell J. Simkins et al.

Summary: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, with inflammatory attacks leading to demyelination and axonal damage. Currently, there are no approved therapies that can adequately restore myelin or protect axons from degeneration.
