Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes express a unique variant surface antigen during malaria in pregnancy, contributing to placental inflammation and dysregulated development, ultimately affecting fetal growth. Effective prevention and management strategies, along with potential therapeutic interventions, are discussed in this review to improve birth outcomes and reduce the health burden of malaria in pregnancy.

Targeting the TLR4/NF-kappa B/S100A9 cascade may serve as a promising therapeutic strategy for Fusobacterium nucleatum-associated colorectal cancer.
