Summary: The study found that individuals using ACEI/ARBs had no significant difference in COVID-19 infection rates and hospitalization rates compared to those not using these medications, and there was no association with medication dose.

COVID-19 fatality prediction in people with diabetes and prediabetes using a simple score upon hospital admission

Harald Sourij et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess predictors of in-hospital mortality in people with prediabetes and diabetes hospitalized for COVID-19 infection, finding that the in-hospital mortality rate was higher in people with diabetes compared to those with prediabetes but without statistical significance. A risk score using five routinely available patient variables, including age, arterial occlusive disease, C-reactive protein, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and aspartate aminotransferase levels, showed excellent predictive performance for assessing in-hospital mortality.

Assessment of Clinical Characteristics and Mortality-Associated Factors in COVID-19 Critical Cases in Kuwait

Mariam Ayed et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the clinical characteristics and mortality risk factors in ICU-admitted COVID-19 patients. The findings identified specific risk factors, such as preexisting hypertension, certain laboratory values, and treatment requirements, that were significantly associated with mortality in these patients. Early identification of these risk factors may help improve outcomes for ICU patients with COVID-19.

Summary: This study revealed a clear link between dementia patients and poor outcomes of COVID-19 infection, suggesting the importance of providing extra care and close monitoring to minimize the risk of infections and prevent severe and fatal outcomes.

COVID-19 and diabetes mellitus: from pathophysiology to clinical management

Soo Lim et al.

Summary: Initial studies have shown that patients with diabetes mellitus have a higher risk of severe COVID-19, potentially due to hyperglycaemia affecting immune and inflammatory responses. Further investigation is needed to determine the optimal management for patients with diabetes mellitus during the ongoing pandemic.
