An approach for wheel flat detection of railway train wheels using envelope spectrum analysis

Araliya Mosleh et al.

Summary: The research presents an approach using envelope spectrum analysis to detect wheel flats in high axle load train wheelsets. The sensitivity of the method to track unevenness, random wheel flat impact occurrence, and flat severity is discussed and tested, as well as its ability to accurately detect wheel flats under different noise intensities. The results show that envelope spectrum analysis is a cost-effective method capable of detecting wheel flats and flat impact frequency for different train speeds in real-world conditions.

Application of Vibration Signal Processing Methods to Detect and Diagnose Wheel Flats in Railway Vehicles

JaeSeok Shim et al.

Summary: This paper studied two useful vibration signal processing methods, cepstrum analysis and cross correlation analysis, in detecting and diagnosing wheel flats. By combining order analysis, these methods effectively evaluate the size and condition of the wheel flat signal, even considering changes in train speed. The methods were tested and confirmed to be appropriate for both simulation and test data in the Korea Railroad Research Institute.
