Stochastic approach to fatigue crack-growth simulation for a railway axle under input data variability

V. Giannella

Summary: The study focuses on the stochastic nature of fatigue crack-growth in mechanical components and the prediction of residual fatigue life of a railway axle under different input parameters variability. Various sources of uncertainty are considered in the analysis.

Use of a rotation-invariant linear strain measure for linear elastic crack propagation calculations

Guido Dhondt et al.

Summary: The classical stress intensity factor concept, based on linear elastic calculations with infinitesimal strains, requires revisions when dealing with structures undergoing large rotations. A new strain measure based on the right stretch tensor is proposed to address this issue, effectively removing the local rotation from the linear strain measure. An example of crack propagation in a rotating beam demonstrates the effectiveness of this method.

Mixed-mode crack growth simulation in aviation engine compressor disk

V. Shlyannikov et al.

Summary: This study focuses on a mixed mode crack growth analysis of an aviation gas turbine engine (GTE) compressor disk based on simulation principles. Three geometries for simulation models of the GTE compressor disk are proposed, with biaxial loading conditions determined and numerically verified to reproduce the stress-strain state in critical zones during operation. Elastic-plastic fracture mechanical parameters are determined through a 3D full-size finite element method (FEM) analysis for the GTE compressor disk and simulation models, based on operating loading conditions.

A generalized criterion for fatigue crack growth in additively manufactured materials - Build orientation and geometry effects

M. M. Mirsayar

Summary: The study investigates the impact of material anisotropy on fatigue crack growth behavior in additively manufactured materials through an energy-based criterion, revealing the significant roles of material anisotropies resulting from build orientation and T-stress in 3D-printed components' FCG behavior.

Numerical Modeling of Crack Growth under Mixed-Mode Loading

Abdulnaser M. Alshoaibi

Summary: This paper aims to simulate the propagation of linear elastic cracks in 3D structures using Ansys software's SMART technology, accurately predicting crack growth paths and stress intensity factors. The study indicates that cracks are attracted to holes and change trajectory to reach or grow by the hole. Experimental crack path trajectories and stress intensity factors had very good agreement with computational study results.
