Ultrasound-sensitive nanodroplets achieve targeted neuromodulation

Harriet Lea-Banks et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using ultrasound-sensitive nanodroplets in combination with Focused Ultrasound (FUS) can achieve neuromodulation in the rat nervous system without disrupting the blood-brain barrier. Results show that this method can induce neurosuppression or neurostimulation through local delivery of small molecule anesthetics or targeted mechanical effects.

Summary: The study compared different methods for skull aberration correction and found that the HAS method outperformed the InSightec ray tracing method in target intensity, peak intensity, and positioning error. These results demonstrate the promise of the HAS method in improving treatment outcomes.

Sonogenetic-Based Neuromodulation for the Amelioration of Parkinson's Disease

Ching-Hsiang Fan et al.

Summary: Sonogenetics is a promising strategy for noninvasively activating targeted neurons in deep brain regions, but its therapeutic efficacy for long-term neurodegenerative diseases needs further validation. By genetically modifying dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson's disease (PD) mice to express mPrestin and using ultrasound stimulation, researchers successfully improved dopaminergic neurodegeneration by 10-fold and alleviated PD symptoms by 4-fold, indicating its potential for clinical treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Protocol for the sonogenetic stimulation of mouse brain by non-invasive ultrasound

Quanxiang Xian et al.

Summary: Targeted ultrasound intervention is a powerful method for manipulating specific neural activity and treating brain disorders by controlling cells with ultrasound-sensitive ion channels. This paper details the necessary steps for successful sonogenetic stimulation in mice, including preparations, surgical procedures, ultrasound stimulation process, and EMG measurement.
